About Eyelash Extensions
What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are individual synthetic, silk, or mink fibers bonded one-by-one to your natural lashes using a medical-grade, FDA-approved adhesive. Unlike strip lashes, extensions are applied strand-by-strand to enhance your natural lashes, creating a fuller, longer, and more dramatic look that lasts weeks. At Envious Lashes, I customize every set based on your eye shape, natural lash health, and lifestyle.
How long do eyelash extensions last?
A full set of eyelash extensions typically lasts 4-6 weeks, with most clients booking refills every 2-3 weeks to maintain a fresh, full look. Extensions naturally shed with your lash growth cycle (usually 60-90 days per lash). With proper care and regular refills, you can wear extensions year-round without ever needing a brand new full set.
Do eyelash extensions damage natural lashes?
When applied correctly by a trained Master Stylist, eyelash extensions do NOT damage natural lashes. Damage occurs when extensions are too heavy, applied incorrectly, or removed improperly at home. This is why I customize each lash strand by strand — applying the wrong weight or length to your natural lash WILL cause damage. I’m rigorously trained to assess each natural lash and select the appropriate extension weight, length, and curl.
What’s the difference between Classic, Hybrid, and Volume lashes?
Classic lashes use a 1:1 application — one extension per natural lash — for a soft, natural enhancement. Hybrid lashes combine classic and volume techniques for a textured, fuller look. Volume lashes apply multiple ultra-fine extensions (3-6 per natural lash) to one natural lash for maximum drama. My Bombshell set uses this volumizing technique, applying 3-6 strands per lash for that signature feathery, mink-like appearance.
How are Envious Lashes different from other lash salons?
Three things set us apart: 17+ years of expertise (I’ve been doing this since before extensions were a trend), complete customization based on eye shape, bone structure, and lifestyle, and strict standards. Crisscross lash application is not tolerated. As NYC’s Master Stylist, I’m meticulous about symmetry and natural lash health. We’ve been rated #1 by Vogue, Allure, Refinery29, and Time Out New York.
The Application Process
How long does a full set take to apply?
A full set takes approximately 1 to 2.5 hours depending on the style selected. Volume sets take longer than classic sets because each natural lash receives multiple extensions. Refills typically take 60-90 minutes. I start every appointment with a consultation to discuss your desired look, lifestyle, and any concerns.
Does it hurt?
Not at all. Most clients find the process relaxing — many fall asleep during application. You’ll lie comfortably with your eyes closed while I carefully bond each extension. The medical-grade adhesive cures odorlessly and the extensions are lightweight.
Should I do anything to prepare for my appointment?
Yes — come with clean, makeup-free lashes. Avoid mascara, eye creams, and oil-based products for at least 24 hours before your appointment. Don’t curl your lashes that day. Avoid caffeine right before your appointment (it can cause flutter, which makes application harder).
Do you offer consultations before booking?
Yes. Every appointment begins with a personalized consultation where I assess your eye shape, natural lash quality, and skin tone to recommend the perfect length, curl, and volume for your face. If you’re a first-time client and want a longer consultation, just let me know when booking.
Cost & Pricing
How much do eyelash extensions cost in NYC?
Pricing at Envious Lashes starts at $140 for a Starter Set (60 individual strands per eye). Other sets include the Natural Glam (80 strands), Alluring Eyes (90 strands), Envious Eyes (95-120 strands), and Bombshell Volume Sets. Refills are typically $80-$150 depending on time since your last appointment. Visit our lash extensions page for full pricing details.
Are refills cheaper than a new full set?
Yes. Refills are designed to maintain your existing set by replacing shed extensions. If you currently have lashes from another salon, an upcharge of $50 applies because I often need to remove or correct previous work before applying new extensions.
Why are NYC eyelash extensions more expensive than other cities?
NYC pricing reflects the quality of artistry, training, products, and overhead. At Envious Lashes, you’re paying for a Master Stylist with 17+ years of experience, medical-grade adhesives, premium synthetic/silk/mink extensions, and a personalized application that takes time to perfect. Cheap lash applications often result in damage that costs more to fix later.
Care & Maintenance
How often should I get refills?
I recommend refills every 2-3 weeks for clients who want their extensions to look consistently full. Waiting longer than 4 weeks usually means you’ve shed more than half your set, and you may need a new full set instead of a refill.
Can I wear mascara with eyelash extensions?
I generally recommend skipping mascara — that’s one of the main benefits of extensions! However, if you must, use only mascara specifically formulated for extensions and never use waterproof mascara (it requires oil-based removers that break down the adhesive bond). Our Envious Lashes Retractable Infinite Ink Liquid Liner is formulated to be safe with extensions.
Can I shower or swim with eyelash extensions?
Yes, but with rules. Avoid water for the first 24-48 hours after application (the adhesive needs to fully cure). After that, you can shower, swim, and exercise normally — just avoid prolonged exposure to chlorine, salt water, and hot steam. Pat dry gently after water exposure, and brush them with a clean spoolie to keep them aligned.
How should I sleep with eyelash extensions?
Sleep on your back if possible. Side and stomach sleepers experience faster shedding on the side they sleep on. A silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction and helps extensions last longer. Anything that requires constantly fussing with the eyelashes or around the eyes will contribute to shedding.
What products should I avoid?
Avoid all oil-based products near your eyes — they break down the adhesive bond. This includes oil-based makeup removers, heavy eye creams, certain serums, and oil cleansers. Stick to oil-free products. Excessive makeup at the lash base also causes premature shedding, so cleanse your lashes gently with a foaming, lash-safe cleanser regularly.
How do I clean my eyelash extensions?
Cleanse daily with a foaming, oil-free lash cleanser. Use a clean spoolie or soft brush to gently work the foam through your lashes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water. Pat dry — never rub. Brush again with a dry spoolie once they’re fully dry. Clean lashes last longer AND prevent infection.
Special Situations
Can I wear eyelash extensions if I have sensitive eyes or contact lenses?
Yes to both. I use medical-grade, FDA-approved adhesives that minimize discomfort, and my process keeps materials away from the lash line itself. Contact lens wearers should remove their lenses before the appointment and reinsert them after. Read my detailed guide on contact lenses and lash extensions for more information.
Can I get eyelash extensions while pregnant?
This is a personal decision and I recommend consulting with your doctor. Many pregnant clients continue to get extensions, but the position required (lying flat for 1-2 hours) can be uncomfortable later in pregnancy. The materials and adhesives I use are safe externally, but always check with your doctor first.
What happens if I have an allergic reaction?
Allergic reactions are rare but possible. Symptoms include redness, swelling, or itching that persists beyond a few hours. If this happens, contact us immediately — I can safely remove the extensions and recommend hypoallergenic adhesives for future appointments. I always do a patch test for first-time clients with sensitivity concerns.
Can I remove eyelash extensions myself at home?
Please don’t. DIY removal is the #1 cause of natural lash damage I see. Oil-based removers and pulling at extensions can rip out natural lashes along with the extensions. If you want to remove your extensions, book a professional removal appointment — it’s quick, painless, and safe for your natural lashes.
Other Services
Do you offer lash lifts and tinting?
Yes. Keratin Lash Lift and Tinting is a great alternative to extensions — it curls and darkens your natural lashes for 6-8 weeks without any maintenance between appointments. Perfect for clients who want a natural enhancement without the upkeep of extensions.
Do you do microblading and nanoblading?
Yes. Our microblading and nanoblading services create natural-looking, semi-permanent brows lasting 1-3 years. We’re known for our customized, strand-by-strand approach to brow design.
